Here’s all you need to know about Facebook’s $725 million settlement

The lawsuit saw the light of day in the year 2018 when Facebook revealed that the platform shared the personal data of 87 million users with Cambridge Analytica. The social media users who were active on the social media app Facebook between May 2007 and December 2022 have until August 25 to enter a claim.

As of right now, the individual settlement payments have not been established because the amount of the payment will depend on how many Facebook users will submit claims and for how long the user maintained their Facebook account. According to various media outlets, Facebook users can get a hold of their share of a $725 million Facebook settlement until August of this year.

Let us share with you, Cambridge Analytica was a British political consultancy that was used by the presidential campaign of Donald Trump and by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and among others. At the time, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was forced to testify before Congress and to take out full-page ads where he apologized for the wrong steps.

Then, Zuckerberg said, “I’m sorry we didn’t do more at the time. We’re now taking steps to ensure this doesn’t happen again.” In the year 2021, Facebook rebranded itself as Meta and settled the class-action suit the next year. Then, Meta didn’t admit to wrongdoing. At that point in time, a spokesperson of the company put out a statement that read, “We pursued a settlement as it’s in the best interest of our community and shareholders.” On the other hand, Meta didn’t issue any additional statements back then.
