If you’ve ever found yourself in the situation where you buy a great perfume, generously put it on only to have it fade away sooner than you’ve hoped – you’re not the only one. However, while the issue can very well sometimes be with the quality of the perfume, more often than not it actually lies in your application.
Believe it or not, there really is a proper way to apply perfume if you wish to make the most of it. So, no matter if you’re dousing yourself in a high-quality pheromone perfume for men and women, or you’re going for a cheap store-bought alternative, here’s what you need to do to make it last as long as possible.
Take a shower
First and foremost, in order to give your chosen scent the best possible chance of lasting long, you need to make sure you apply it to a completely clean surface. So, hop into the shower and give yourself a proper (but not too harsh of a) scrub. Remember to avoid using overly-scented body washes and soaps so that the smells don’t collide with your perfume once you apply it.
Use vaseline
Next, note that a perfume won’t last long if it’s applied to dry skin, so make sure you moisturize well. Also, add just a pinch of vaseline to your pulse points to prolong the smell. Since vaseline is oil based, it works great when paired with oil-based perfumes, by creating a strong bond that slows down evaporation.
Put your perfume on first
Once you’re clean and well moisturized, you can apply your perfume on various pressure points on your body. Do this before putting your clothes on to avoid having them rub off the scent. For some extra oomph, you can add a light spritz of perfume to your clothes and hair later on. However, keep in mind that some perfumes may cause stains on fabric, so make sure you test it out on a piece you’re not emotionally attached to before doing so. That way you’ll avoid ruining your favorite piece last-minute.
Don’t spray perfume all over
Another common mistake many people make is misting the perfume instead of spraying it directly to the place they want to apply it to. Needless to say, this will only cause the fine mist to fall all over, missing the crucial points and making your couch, bag, floor and cat also smell nice. So, instead of spraying your perfume from a big distance, make sure you target the specific points and bring the bottle closer to them.
Don’t rub
Simply put, once you spray the perfume, do your best to resist the urge and immediately rub it into your skin. Although this action is basically instinctive for most of us, it’s actually very wrong. So, apply your perfume lightly and allow it to air dry. If your perfume is oil-based, and you’ve done all of the previously-mentioned steps correctly, you can give your wrists and pressure points a gentle rub later on, to reactivate the scent.
Control yourself and change scents regularly
In the end, it’s common knowledge that you get used to the smell of your own perfume over time, particularly if you only use one scent. That’s when mistakes can easily happen, and you may end up overdoing it, which will only have the opposite effect on everyone around you. To avoid this, make sure you only spray a single spritz to your targeted areas, and even consider swapping between a few different scents regularly. This way you will give your sense of smell a break and prevent it from getting used to a single smell.
