Fire Breaks Out on the Sets of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ in the UK

A fire broke out on the sets of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 in the UK on Monday. The production then had to be halted, and firefighters were called on the spot. Fortunately, the fire could be put off soon, and no cast or crew members were harmed in the incident.

This marks the second major production issue for Amazon Studio’s fantasy shows in recent days. On March 21, a horse died on the sets of the show, after which PETA called out the producers.

The incident took place at Bray Studios in Windsor, where the filming for the second season of the show is going on. An electrical fire broke out in a warehouse in the studio in the afternoon, and smoke could be seen from a short distance. The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service were called, which responded with multiple engines.

The fire could be put out around an hour later. The production remained halted as a precaution, while the cast and crew remained in the studios and did not have to evacuate the spot. The filming was resumed shortly after the incident.

The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service released a statement detailing the incident: “At 12:26 pm on Monday, 3 April, we received reports of a fire at Bray Studios near Windsor. Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews from Bracknell, Slough, and Maidenhead Fire Stations were sent to the scene.”

“Upon arrival, crews discovered a fire in a single storey storage workshop located away from the filming set. Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus used three hose reels and a main jet to extinguish the fire. Firefighters were on the scene for approximately four hours and 35 minutes. An investigation will take place to determine the cause of the fire.”

A Horse Died on the Sets of the Show A Few Days Ago

The Rings of Power made recently made news for another incident when a horse died of cardiac arrest on the sets before rehearsals for a sequence. “We are deeply saddened to confirm that a production horse died on 21st March,” a spokesperson for Amazon said at the time.

“The incident took place in the morning whilst the horse was being exercised prior to rehearsals. The trainer was not in costume and filming had yet to commence. Both a veterinarian and a representative of the American Humane Association were present at the time. The independent necropsy has confirmed that the horse died of cardiac failure,” he added.

However, PETA was not satisfied with the response and slammed the producers for using real horses for filming instead of CGIs and mechanical rigs. “It seems that living underground with the orcs is par for the course for the producers of The Rings of Power because they have the option to use CGI, mechanical rigs, and other humane methods,” Peta SVP Lisa Lange said.

“Peta is calling on the show’s creators – and all other producers – to take on a new quest without using any real horses,” she added. Despite the production issues, the filming for The Rings of Power is on track, and the second season is expected to release in 2024.
