The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was one of the most-awaited shows of the last year. The Amazon Prime Video, serving as a spin-off to the world-famous trilogy, opened to mixed reviews by critics and audiences but went on to become the highest-watched show on the platform, surpassing 25 million viewers in its debut episode.
The first season set up the premise for the fantasy series and followed the rings being forged. The storyline will now move forward in another season, which was officially ordered by Amazon way back in 2019. Here is everything you need to know about The Rings of Power season 2.
The Rings of Power Season 2: Release Date
Amazon has not yet officially announced the release date for the second season of the series. However, it is expected to premiere sometime in 2024, so fans still have to wait for about a year before they get to see further adventures of Middle-earth’s Second Age. The filming of season 2 is currently going on in the UK.
Earlier in October 2022, showrunner Patrick McKay revealed that the production team would be working on the new season for ‘another couple years’, which sets the release date in 2024. The makers also stated that they would need at least five seasons to completely tell the story, so the show is going to be on air for a good long time.
“They knew from the beginning that was the size of the canvas … this was a big story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. There are things in the first season that don’t pay off until Season 5. We even know what our final shot of the last episode is going to be,” showrunner JD Payne revealed.
The Rings of Power Season 2: Storyline
The upcoming season will revolve around the rise of Sauron, the iconic villain in the franchise. Payne earlier teased how the storyline will be explored in the second season and said, “Even knowing that Sauron was partially involved in the science behind the making of the rings, we see [Galadriel] give the go-ahead to make the rings anyway.”
“She also has to bear some responsibility: ‘I empowered the Dark Lord. I saved his life on a raft. I was party to him coming from obscurity to head an army.’ That’s a lot she has to wrestle with and be accountable for. I think we can expect to see her having to pick up those threads and see how those decisions impact her various relationships,” he added.
The Rings of Power Season 2: Star Cast
The main cast members, whose characters survived the events of the first season, will be reprising their roles in season 2. Cynthia Addai-Robinson will again star as Míriel, Robert Aramayo as Elrond, Owain Arthur as Durin IV, Maxim Baldry as Isildur, Nazanin Boniadi as Bronwyn, Morfydd Clark as Galadriel, Ismael Cruz Córdova as Arondir, Charles Edwards as Celebrimbor, and Charlie Vickers as Sauron.
The new additions will include Gabriel Akuwudike, Oliver Alvin-Wilson, Yasen “Zates” Atour, Stuart Bowman, Gavi Singh Chera, William Chubb, Ben Daniels, Kevin Eldon, Amelia Kenworthy, Will Keen, Selina Lo, Calam Lynch, Nia Towle, Nicholas Woodeson and Ciarán Hinds.
